CLINICAL SUPERVISION TRAINING

Quality supervision is consistently identified as a practice that directly benefits workers, agencies and clients through increasing job satisfaction and morale; ensuring clients are receiving optimal treatment through better communication; providing transference of complex clinical skills to workers and encouraging a culture of best practice and innovation.

The Bouverie Centre is offering two Clinical Supervision Training courses in 2012.

Brief description of the course

This is a six-day training course, comprising a mixture of theory and practice in supervision. It covers a number of topics, including the history of supervision, supervision models, contracting, feedback, legal issues and ethics, diversity, and action methods, amongst others. In general, the first half of each day covers theory and research related to these topics, and the afternoon involves practice exercises in small groups. There is homework built into the course: this usually involves reading an article along with at least one practice exercise.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the six days, it is anticipated that participants will be able to:

·         Understand a range of supervision modes, methods and models, and begin to identify their own supervision practice model

·         Identify the roles and tasks within supervision, and factors which enhance the process, and ensure professionalism

·         Develop ways of giving and eliciting feedback in supervision

·         Be aware of and work with issues such as culture, power, class, age and gender in supervision

·         Consider the organisational context of supervision

·         Extend their repertoire of ‘use of self’ within supervision

·         Develop an understanding of compassion satisfaction and fatigue, and develop a self-care plan

Who should attend?

This course is designed for clinicians who are already engaged in providing clinical supervision. Reference is made to the difference between line-management and clinical supervision, but the emphasis is on clinical supervision. It would be suitable for psychologists, social workers, family therapists, counsellors, and anyone in the helping professions who is currently or about to be providing clinical supervision to others.
