An Introduction to Child Focused and Child Inclusive Mediation of Post Separation Parenting Disputes
Provides therapists and helping professionals with an outline of the theory and practice of mediating disputes after separation and divorce in ways that are respectful of parental concerns and simultaneously keep children’s needs up front and centre.
Learning Outcomes: Participants will:
· Gain an understanding of the difference between child focused and child inclusive practice and when each may be used.
· See demonstrations of child focused and child inclusive mediation.
· Get to practice child focused practice mediation and some elements of child inclusive mediation.
· Consider the differences between family mediation and other forms of intervention in families such as family therapy.
· Learn how to make use of and relate to the new and expanded family relationship services that have come into existence as part of the 2006 family law reforms.
Who Should Attend:
This presentation is suitable for therapists and other ‘helping professionals’: case managers, social workers, psychologists, nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, youth and childcare workers etc. who find themselves drawn into parenting disputes following separation and divorce. No prior knowledge or experience of family mediation or family law is required. Attendance at the workshop on Appreciating and Responding to Parenting Conflicts after Separation and Divorce” would be an advantage but not essential
Presenter: Lawrie Moloney PhD. Lawrie is a former Director of the Family Court Counselling Service and a former Head of the Department of Counselling and Psychological Health at La Trobe University. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Family Studies. In 2003, with Drs Jenn McIntosh and Tom Fisher, Lawrie launched the “Children in Focus” program, which provided training and a platform for considering and researching child focused and child inclusive practices.
