PhD program

The Bouverie Centre offers two courses at Doctorate level: the Doctor of Clinical Science (ClinScD) in Family Therapy, and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Family Therapy. Information about these courses is available below. 

The aim of this course is to equip family therapists with advanced conceptual, practice, supervisory and research skills so that they can assume positions of leadership in the field.

This professional doctorate in family therapy involves
  • a 67% research degree;
  • 3 years full-time study (or equivalent part-time);
  • a thesis of 30,000-60,000 words;
  • one core unit;
  • research colloquia; and
  • three clinical electives.

Applicants must have the equivalent of an Honours degree and a Postgraduate Diploma of Family Therapy

This is a 3 year full-time, or 5 year part-time research degree.
 
Graduation from this course is contingent on the successful completion of a research thesis of up to 80,000 words in an area relevant to the research priorities of the Bouverie Centre and the Faculty of Health Sciences.
 
Entry requirements
Applicants for Doctoral candidature should already hold a Masters degree or have completed an Honours Bachelor degree at a very high level of achievement.

NOTE: The University is closed on Australia Day (Tuesday 26th January), at Easter (Friday 2nd April to Tuesday 6th April inclusive), on Anzac Day (Friday 26th April in lieu of 25th april), and on Queen’s Birthday (Monday 8th June). The University remains open on Labour Day and Melbourne Cup Day.

Course fees
No fees apply.  Full-time applicants can apply for Commonwealth or University research scholarships depending on your area of research interest and academic background.
 
Scholarships and Candidature
La Trobe University offers an extensive scholarship and candidature program for postgraduate students who are undertaking higher degrees by research. Research Services coordinates the administration of Masters by research and Doctoral candidature, and scholarships for these degrees. Scholarships are available for Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents, and a limited number of awards are available to overseas applicants.
